DROMEDARY CARAVANS NEAR FACHI, Ténéré Desert, Niger. (N 18°14' E 11°40'). For decades the Tuareg have traded salt by driving dromedary caravans over the 380 miles (610 km) between the city of Agadez and the Bilma salt marshes. The dromedaries, connected in single file, travel in convoys at a rate of 25 miles (40 km) per day, despite temperatures reaching 104° F (46° C) in the shade and loads of nearly 220 pounds (100 kg) per animal. Fachi, the only major town on the Azalaï (salt caravan) route, is an indispensable stop. Caravans, at one time made up of as many as 20,000 dromedaries, generally are limited today to 100 animals; they are gradually being replaced by trucks, each of which can carry as much merchandise as 250 dromedaries. The number of motor vehicles on the planet has risen from 40 million in 1945 to 680 million today. Although the number remains low in developing countries, this is where automobile use is growing the fastest. If the entire world had the same vehicular use as the United States, the total number of vehicles in earth would be 3 billion.
