Situated at the heart of Oxford University is the distinctive dome and beautiful circular building of the Radcliffe Camera. The word “Camera” in Latin means room or chamber and was named after Royal Physician Dr John Radcliffe who bequeathed £40,000 to construct this stunning building. It was built by James Gibbs in the English Palladian style and it was he who was also responsible for the design of the Church of St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square in London.
The “Rad Cam” or “Radders” as it is affectionately known, originally housed the Radcliffe Science Library and was later used as additional reading rooms for the Bodleian Library. Between 1909 and 1912 an underground book store was added along with a tunnel which linked the Radcliff Camera to the Bodleian Library. It has two levels and enough space to hold 600,000 books but unfortunately is not open to the public.
