On the steep hillside of Roulston Scar, just beside the village of Kilburn and overlooking the Vale of York is the famous Kilburn White Horse. At 97 metres (318 feet) long, it is one of England’s largest hill figures, and on a clear day it is claimed that the horse can be seen as far away as Leeds and Harrogate. Thomas Taylor, who was influenced by the Wiltshire horse hill figures, designed the horse, which was marked out on Roulston Scar with the help of village school master John Hodgson and his pupils, and cut by local volunteers. It was completed on 4th November 1857. Nowadays, it is maintained by the Kilburn White Horse Association, made up of 16 local residents who raise funds to maintain the biggest of the eleven remaining white horse landmarks found in Britain.
