Snowdonia National Park covers an area of 2,132 square km (823 square miles) and stretches from Conwy in the north to the River Dyfi in the south. It was created in 1951 and is one of the eleven national parks in England and Wales. The
park is governed by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, even though the area is made up of private and publicly owned land and more than 26,000 people live within the park. Over six million people visit the park each year. The peak of Snowdon stands at 1085 metres (3.560 feet) above sea level and is the highest point in England and Wales. It is part of the nine mountain ranges that cover around 52% of the Park and includes many peaks that are over 915 metres (3000
feet) in height. It has a varied landscape including steep river gorges, green valleys waterfalls and passes. Also the Dyfi, Dwyryd and Mawddach estuaries and twenty three miles of coastline with sandy beaches adds to the diversity of the Park.
Although the physical aspect of this area creates certain difficulties, it is interesting to note that 80% of land is farmed.
