Caernarfon Castle is probably the most famous castle in Wales. Dominating the town of Caernarfon, the 13th century castle was the greatest of those built buy King Edward III. It was built as a military stronghold, a seat of government and royal palace, symbolising English dominance over the Welsh after the defeat of Llywelyn the Last. Yet in 1294, the castle was captured and burned by Madog ap Llywelyn before it was even completed. However, it was later retaken by Edward and building was finished around 1330, at a final cost of £25,000. Stone for the castle was excavated from around the site creating the moat; the remainder shipped in by sea. In some places the walls are 6 metres (20 feet) thick. Caernarfon Castle stands at the southern end of the Menai Strait between North Wales and Anglesey and is a World Heritage site. It gained worldwide fame in 1969 with the investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales.
