Lake Bala, or Llyn Tegid in Welsh, is the largest natural body of water in Wales. It covers 484 hectares and is 4.5 miles long and about a mile wide. It is a good location for anglers as it contains approximately fourteen species of fish, with one in particular being unique to the lake. The gwyniad, a subspecies of European whitefish has reportedly been stranded in the lake since the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. It is also a popular destination for watersport enthusiasts due to the fresh winds that sweep through the valley. Legend has it that there is a lost
palace beneath the lake and a monster known as Teggie lives deep in the water. Between Bala and Llanuwchllyn runs the Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid, a narrow gauge railway and is one of the Great Little Trains of Wales. Its nine mile return journey offers beautiful views of the lake and scenery of the Snowdonia National Park.
