Ambleside has been occupied since Roman Times when the fort of Galava was built there to house 500 soldiers. The remains of the fort can still be seen in Borran’s field at Waterhead. It is situated at the northern end of Windermere which is surrounded by mountainous scenery. Industry in the area has included charcoal making and tool manufacturing as well as mining and quarrying. In 1650 the town was granted a market charter and so developed trade mainly in corn, paper, cloth and bark. Much of the local slate and stone is still used for house building in the
area. Ambleside is an isolated part of the country and in the past that has helped to protect it from invading Scots and the Plague! It is a popular destination for walkers as it has easy access to the mountains and fells.
