Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland, (N 56°'14" W 5° 26'43") Card 150x150mm with recycled envelope and biodegradable cello. Detailed caption on the reverse of the card. Card is blank for your own message. The Glenfinnan Viaduct will be easily recognised by Harry Potter fans as it was the setting in the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where the Jacobite Steam Train became transformed into the Hogwarts Express. The viaduct was a huge engineering challenge and was built in 1897-1901 by Sir Robert McAlpine. It is 380 metres (1247 ft) long and has 21 arches reaching as high as 30 m (100 ft). It is part of the West Highland Railway line which runs between Fort William and Mallaig which when built, was important for the fishing industry and the local industry in general. The village of Glenfinnan lies at the head of Loch Shiel and it was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard of 19 August 1745. Photographs copyright of Jason Hawkes |
