Stonehenge ("bank and ditch") is a prehistoric monument located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. It is one of the most famous monuments in the world and was named UNESCO world heritage site in 1986. It was built in three stages between 2800 and 1900 B.C. and was originally made up of about 125 stones arranged in four concentric circles. These monoliths, weighing up to 30 tons and 7 m (23 ft) tall are made of sandstone which was quarried many miles away. Modern calculations estimate that it would have taken 500 men to pull one stone, with an extra 100 men needed to lay the huge rollers in front of the sledge. Overall, it is estimated that more than thirty million hours of labour was needed to construct it. Each monument has been aligned with the rising sun at the solstice and whether it was designed as a place of worship or as part of a huge astronomical calendar, nobody really knows. Every year, crowds of spectators converge at Stonehenge to watch Druids celebrating the Summer Solstice. Photograph copyright of Jason Hawkes
