Arten Gill Viaduct, Settle-Carlisle Railway, North Yorkshire, (N54° 16' 05 W2° 20' 42)Card 150x150mm with recycled envelope and biodegradable cello. Detailed caption on the reverse of the card. Card is blank for your own message. Completed in 1876, the Settle to Carlisle Railway is England's most scenic railway and was the last mainline railway to be built. The landscape presented a tremendous challenge to the engineers, requiring 17 major viaducts and 14 tunnels together with 115 km (72 miles) of track. At Upper Dentdale the track emerges from Blea Moor Tunnel to cross two viaducts; Arten Gill (as seen here in the photograph) and Dent Head. Arten Gill Viaduct is 200 metres (657 feet) long with 11 arches, each 36 metres (118 feet) high and is built of massive blocks of Dent marble, from the now-disused quarries nearby. The Ribblehead Viaduct is 400 metres (1,312 feet) long with 24 arches, each 32 metres (105 feet) high, and is another impressive structure on the railway.
