Bristol Balloon Festival, (N 51°27'18" W 002°37'39") Card 150x150mm with recycled envelope and biodegradable cello. Detailed caption on the reverse of the card. Card is blank for your own message. Bristol is the largest city in the South West of England and is an important cultural centre with a thriving university community. The famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, as seen in the photograph, was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was also responsible for building the Great Western Railway and the SS Great Britain. The suspension bridge, with a span of 214 metres (702 feet), at a height of 75 metres (246 feet) above the Avon, was opened in December 1864. Originally intended only for horse-drawn carriages, the toll bridge now carries 4 million cars each year. Bristol is also famous as a centre for the design and manufacture of hot-air balloons. Once a year, in August, balloonists from all over the world converge on the city at Ashton Court to fly together, a visual spectacle that fills the sky with interesting shapes and novel designs.
