Before flowering spectacularly, this French Guinea forest tree loses all its leaves. The botanists gave it the scientific name Tabebuia impetiginosa. The Brazilians call it pau d’arco (bow wood) or ipe roxo, while the Argentines call it Lapacho. It is found in humid tropical forests from Mexico to Argentina and because it is extremely hard; its wood doesn't float. It is known throughout Latin America for its medicinal properties. In this sea of greenery, the isolated flowering Tabebuia bears witness to the low density of this species. Unlike temperate forests, populated by one or just a few species of tree, such as fir, pine, oak or birch forests, tropical forests contain thousands of different species of plant life. French Guinea has 5,500 different varieties of plant life, including more than a thousand types of tree. Up to 300 different species can be found in a single hectare of forest, more than in the whole of Europe. Faced with such biodiversity, we can see that these forests cannot be exploited in the same way as the other forests. Is it reasonable to destroy an entire forest just to extract the one or two trees of interest to the foresters?
