Studios and vats of dyers in Fez, Morocco. (N34°05' W4°57').Card 170x120mm with recycled envelope and biodegradable cello. Detailed caption on the reverse of the card. Card is blank for your own message.

The dyers’ district of Fez, in Morocco, has kept its authenticity: for centuries the same ancestral techniques of dyeing have been used, passed down from one generation to another. Woollen or cotton fibre, as well as tanned hides of sheep, goats, cows, and dromedaries, are submerged in dye vats with ceramic surfaces, fullers, and stomped on by the craftsmen. The colouring is derived from natural pigments and prepared in mills at the Fes wadi: poppy, indigo, saffron, date nuts, and antimony are used to obtain red, blue, yellow, beige, and black, respectively. The dyed materials are used to make the world-renowned carpets and leather objects that are the principal handmade Moroccan exports.
