Square greetings cards - Somerset Rainbow

Somerset Rainbow (N51° 16' 18  W2° 53' 04)

 
The Somerset Levels, once inundated by the sea, gradually became a vast area of salt marsh. As long as 6,000 years
ago, people built wooden trackways across the marshes to provide access to settlements and hunting areas. Over the
centuries, rivers were diverted by settlers, and complex networks of channels were dug to help drain the land. The
low-lying fen and peat-rich marshland of the Somerset Levels is still prone to periodic flooding, not by the sea any more
but during the winter rains when the river and drainage systems become overwhelmed. The peat bogs not only hold
a remarkable record of human settlements and the environment but they are an important haven for wildlife. The peat
itself has been cut for at least 1,000 years, to be used for animal bedding or dried in blocks for fuel. Frequently swathed
in low lying mist that adds a touch of mystery and magic to this place, the Levels are bounded by the uplands of the
Mendips, the Quantocks and the Blackdown Hills, and punctuated by the legendary Isle of Avalon, at Glastonbury.
