Square greetings card - Millennium Wheel

Millennium Wheel, London, (N 51° 30'11"  W 0° 07'10")

 
No other structure built in recent times has captured the imagination as has the London Eye. It was built in just
16 months at a cost of £75 million and is positioned on the south bank of the River Thames to commemorate
the beginning of the new millennium. In its first year, 3.2 million people rode on it, a million more than predicted.
It is 135m (443 feet) high, has 32 capsules holding 800 passengers, takes 30 minutes to do one revolution and the
panoramic views of London are awe-inspiring. The construction of the Eye was an engineering feat. Because of the
narrowness of the site and surrounding buildings, it was decided to bring the structure by sea from Rotterdam and up
the River Thames. The completed structure came in six loads and a massive floating crane was positioned to offload
and assemble each component. It took just one day on the 10th October 1999 to lift the fourth tallest structure in
London and by the 1st January 2000, it was revolving. On 9th March 2000, the wheel was opened to the public.
