Square greetings card - Heart Orchard

Heart Orchard, near Oare in Wiltshire, (N51° 21' 55  W1° 46' 27)

 
Orchards can be found in many parts of the UK growing a variety of fruit, including apples, pears and plums.
Apples originated in the Middle East, around 4,000 years ago and fruit and vines have been grown in the UK since
the Roman times. Various apple varieties were introduced at around the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066.
The first large scale orchards were planted by fruiterer Richard Harris in Tynham in Kent at the request of King
Henry VIII. He imported various apple trees from France to plant at Tynham which was then used to cultivate and
distribute trees to other growers. Today it is estimated that there are 2,300 varieties of apple alone. The English
Cox is still one of the most popular varieties of apple, (with 82 million kg (181 million lbs) harvested yearly) dating
back to 1825 when Richard Cox planted the first tree in his garden. The main commercial fruit growing areas in
the UK are Kent, Somerset, Devon, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
