Square greetings card - Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury Tor, Somerset, (N  51°08'38"  W 002°41'57")

 
Glastonbury Tor is a prominent and striking natural hill that rises from the Somerset levels. It is visited by thousands of
people each year because of its association with legends, myths, religion and mystical beliefs. Legend has it that Joseph
of Arithmathea buried the chalice used at Jesus Christ’s Last Supper in a spring on its slopes; it is reputed to be the burial
place for King Arthur and the home of Gwyn ap Nudd, the Lord of the Underworld and King of the Fairies. Human
occupation is believed to date back as far as the sixth century. A medieval monastery of St Michael was built in the 1100s
which remained until 1275 when it was destroyed by a powerful earthquake. It was then rebuilt in the 14th century
and at the time of the Dissolution of Glastonbury Abbey in 1539, the last Abbott and two of his monks were brutally
executed on the Tor. The church became a ruin but the tower was restored in the 18th century and remains today.
